Breast Lift

Summary

Breast lift or mastopexy is a surgical procedure to lift sagging or loose breasts. The surgery is designed for women who have stretched skin or decreased breast volume. It is not recommended for women who are planning on losing weight, getting pregnant or nursing a child.

Length of the procedure: 1 to 2 hours

Hospital Stay:Most patents are released form care within 1 day their procedure.

Recovery before traveling home:Patients seeking breast lift through medical tourism can return home within 7 days of their procedure.

Travel Tip:It is best to plan an extended stay beyond your procedure to allow for post operative care. Most surgeons require several follow-ups in the days after the procedure. Find a hotel nearby the clinic you have the procedure for easy access to medical care. It is best to find a hotel room that is handicap accessible so you are properly accommodated during your recovery.

Procedure Details

Your surgery will begin with the administration of general anesthesia. Typically, this surgery is performed through 3 small incisions around the circumference of your areola. However, in some cases a surgeon must make an incision around the areola, another in the fold of your breast, and an adjoining scar vertically between the areola and the fold.

After the surgeon makes the required incisions they will remove the excess skin. Once they have removed the excess skin that is causing the breast to sag they will reposition the nipple. The wounds are then closed with absorbable sutures, so they do not need to be removed during post operative care.

After the Procedure

After the procedure you will be taken to recovery. Your vitals will be monitored carefully during this time. When you have woken from the surgery and your vitals are stable you will be moved to a regular hospital room or released from care. After the surgery you will have an elastic bandage or surgical bra on. This will be worn over top the gauze dressing that is wrapped around your chest. You will be required to wear a surgical bra night and day for at least 4 weeks after your surgery.

Immediately following your surgery you may have surgical drainage tubes in place to drain fluid. These drainage tubes will be removed in about 3 days in most cases. Do not be alarmed if you are released from care while they are still in place, this is completely normal.

Self care after breast lift:

  • Resume light activity with 1 to 2 days
  • Limit stretching until you are healed
  • Return to work within 1 to 2 weeks
  • No heavy lifting for 3 to 6 weeks
  • No driving for 2 weeks

Result

When expectations are realistic most patients are satisfied with the results of breast lift surgery. It is important to note that in some cases the scar from this procedure can be extensive, and they are permanent. The first several months after this surgery the scars are often red and lumpy. This often fades over time to a thin white line. It is also important to note that breast lift surgery does not defy gravity. Overtime, the breasts can begin to sag again.
